Langkawi
The Muslim Travel Guide to the Gem of Malaysia
Langkawi has to be my personal favorite part of Malaysia. It is a magical little island on the west coast of Malaysia, situated right above Penang Island. The weather is pleasant, the people are welcoming and the activities are endless. As soon as you land on the island you can feel the cool island breeze. It’s a welcome change from the heat and humidity found in other parts of the country. The vibe on the island is laid back and relaxed, making it a perfect spot for a romantic vacation. Make sure to read the detailed Malaysia Muslim Travel Guide first for some very valuable information before traveling.

Where to Pray
There are many Masjids around Langkawi. Masjid Al Hana is the largest Masjid in Langkawi and worth a visit if you’re in the area. You will also find prayer rooms in almost all attractions and will have no trouble finding a safe, secluded place to pray.
Where to Eat
Langkawi has many great restaurants to choose from. The high majority of the island is Muslim and finding Halal places to eat will be no problem. I would personally recommend trying out Street Food at the daily Night Markets that take place throughout the Island. I would also recommend visiting a steamboat restaurant as they are very popular in Langkawi. We visited Local Food Cafe, a small family-owned steamboat restaurant in Kuah. Another restaurant I recommend is OK Boss Asam Pedas near Cenang Beach. It’s a hawker-style restaurant with great local food.
Accommodation
Adya Hotel – An Islamic Themed Hotel
This has to be one of the most unique hotels I have ever stayed in. It’s called the Adya Hotel and is located in the Kuah area. It’s an Islamic themed hotel with little touches throughout the building to accommodate Muslim travelers. These include things like Adhaan in the hotel hallways five times a day, Quran recitation in the hallways after fajr, a communal prayer room, and a women’s only swimming pool. They also have a good breakfast buffet.
Berjaya Langkawi Resort
A beautiful resort with rooms and overwater private villas. If you’re looking for a little more privacy and want to enjoy nature then the Berjaya Langkawi Resort is an ideal option. It is located in the midst of the rainforest and has its own private beach.
How to get around
Grab
Like all the rest of Malaysia, one of the best ways to get around is with Grab. It’s super convenient, cheap and safe. It is what I used and had absolutely no problems with.
Private Driver
Private drivers are also a great option if you want to explore the Island. If you are interested in this option, you can connect with Brother Ahmed who I met during my stay there. He has his own limousine service and will be able to assist you further.
How to Stay Safe
Langkawi is safe. Take normal safety precautions as you would anywhere.
General Tips
- Bargain! Don’t accept any price tour operators give you upfront. Always negotiate the price, especially if you are a large group.
- Due to the weather and geography of Langkawi, bugs, insects and other little critters are normal. Generally speaking, they are harmless. The faster you get over your fear, the more you will enjoy your time in Langkawi.
- You will find many monkeys in and around the island. Some of them can be quite aggressive and are known to bite. Keep your distance, avoid eye contact and don’t bother them.
- Depending on where you are coming from, you can get to Langkawi Island by plane or ferry.
Fun Facts
- In Malay, Langkawi meals Red Eagle. “Lang” means “red” and “Kawi” means “eagle”.
