Kuala Lumpur, the heart of Malaysia. This city is a beautiful mix of cultures and traditions. It is the financial and economic center of Malaysia. This metropolis is crowded with people, cars and skyscraper. There is lots to do and experience in Kuala Lumpur. It’s a Muslim-friendly and safe travel destination. Adhaan can be heard on loudspeakers, Halal food is easily accessible and Masjids are some of the most beautiful in the world. Where to Eat

This is a hard one because Kuala Lumpur has no shortage of food. Due to the mix of different cultures, it is easy to find halal food that will please your taste buds. It is important to note that not everything is Halal. It is important you ask before sitting down to eat.

There are many Masjids in and around Kuala Lumpur.

The National Mosque of Malaysia

The National Mosque of Malaysia is as beautiful as it is grand. The entire Masjid complex is 12 acres and has can hold up to 15,000 worshippers. The Masjid has been visiting by many politicians from around the world including Barack Obama during his presidency.

Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque

The largest Masjid in Malaysia and the second largest in all of Southeast Asia. Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque holds the record for the largest dome in any Masjid in the world. The Masjid has a capacity to accommodate 24,000 worshippers.

Masjid Putra

One of the most popular and beautiful Masjid in all of Malaysia. Masjid Putra, also known as the Pink Mosque is located about a 35-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur in the city of Putrajaya. It is a huge Masjid that can accommodate 15000 worshippers.

Jamek Masjid

One of the oldest Masjids located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. You are likely to come across this Masjid as you are walking around the city. Jamek Masjid is perfectly situated at the intersection of two rivers surrounding by tall high rises.

Where to Stay

Airbnb

Airbnb is what I used and found some very affordable places to stay in all ranges. I stayed in a condo building called The Roberston. This apartment had the most perfect view of the Petronas Towers and the Menara Towers. I could highly recommend this place. The best part about this place was the restaurant at the bottom of the building. It’s called Kedai Mamak Husin and has amazing halal food for very cheap. You can find the Airbnb listing here.

Hotels

You can also find great hotels in Kuala Lumpur for all budgets. My main tip would be to make sure you book in a good location that either walking distance to most attractions. I personally use Agoda for hotels as they usually have the cheapest rates.

How to get around

Grab

Grab is the best way to get around Kuala Lumpur. It is cheap and safe. Traffic can be a problem due to congestion, so keep that in mind.

Public Transit

Kuala Lumpur has an amazing network of trains and buses. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way of getting around then public transportation is a very viable option.

Walk

Kuala Lumpur is a walking-friendly city. It’s free and one of the ways to experience the sights and sounds of the city.

How to Stay Safe

Kuala Lumpur is very safe. Follow normal safety precautions as you would anywhere. Always hold onto you belonging and be extra careful in crowded areas for pickpocketers.

General Tips

  • Be cautious of pickpocketing around Petronas Towers.
  • It can be very hot in the afternoon. Stay hydrated and stay indoors if you can.
  • KL is more expensive than many of the other cities in Malaysia.
  • Kuala Lumpur international airport is close to a one hour drive away from downtown. Keep that in mind when you have to catch a flight.
  • I found some really good deals on Petaling Street Market. Make sure to bargain to get the best possible deal.
