Melaka

The Muslim Travel Guide to Melaka

Melaka (also known as Malacca) is one of my most favorite cities in Malaysia. It’s a small little city a few hours away from Kuala Lumpur. The city is rich in history and has a vibrant nightlife. Muslims make up the majority of the population here. Finding beautiful Masjids and halal restaurants to eat at is no problem. Make sure to read the detailed Malaysia Muslim Travel Guide first for some very valuable information before traveling.

Melaka has no shortage of food options. There are hawker-style food stands all over the entire country. My personal recommendation is to explore different options. I have listed a few places below but by no means are they the best. You will find hidden gems all over Melaka.

How to get around

Grab is the best way to get around Melaka. It is a safe and affordable option.

Where to Stay

Mahkota Hotel

Awesome Airbnb I stayed in for a week. It’s located in a safe hotel complex right across Mahkota Parade Mall. The apartment is spacious, clean and has a kitchen. It is only a few minutes walk to Jonker Street Night Market.

Holiday Inn Melaka

If you prefer big-name hotels, then the Holiday Inn is a great option. It is located right beside Mahkota Hotel.

How to Stay Safe

Melaka is a safe city. As long as you are taking common-sense safety precautions as you should everywhere you travel, you should be just fine. Pickpocketing can occur in busy areas, so keep your belongings close to you and only carry as little cash you need for the day.

General Tips

  • Malaysia is a tropical country and the day time can be very hot, especially for small children. Stay inside during these times and do outdoor activities later in the day and evening.
  • Weather is a little unpredictable and it can rain at random times. Having an umbrella with you when you travel is a good idea.
  • Street food is A LOT cheaper than the food you will find at restaurants.

Fun Facts

  • Melaka was once occupied by the Portuguese and still have remnants from that time.
  • 65% of the locals in Melaka are Muslims
