Where to Eat
Food, like all of Malaysia, is one of the highlights of Penang. Although Halal food is a little less abundant compared to the rest of Malaysia, there is definitely no shortage. There are many street food vendors as well as 100% Halal restaurants all over Penang. I use Google Maps to find Halal restaurants close to me and choose the ones that have good reviews. Here are a few that I think are worth checking out.
- Restoran DEEN
- Hameediyah Restaurant
- Art Of Dragon Gallery for some shaved ice dessert
- Restoran Kapitan – Their chicken tikka is to die for!
Food Panda and Grab
You can also use delivery apps like Food Panda and Grab to order food right to your doorstep. I used these apps ALL the time! There were many days when we just hung out at our hotel and these apps came in very useful. They’re easy to use and are super convenient. Many times delivery is free or there are promotions going on that can save you money.

Accommodation
Airbnb is a great option for booking accommodation. You can usually find a good place to stay in George Town for a good nightly rate. I stayed in a studio apartment in a building called Mansion One with a beautiful sea view. The building was in good shape with a convenience store and Starbucks located on the first floor. You can check out the property and other properties on Airbnb.
Agoda is one of the best websites when it comes to booking hotels. Over and over again, I come back to Agoda for competitive rates and I usually find it to always have the lowest rate. I personally stayed in DoubleTree by Hilton by the sea. It was an incredible hotel with all sorts of amenities. The breakfast is grand with all Halal food! If you’re willing to spend a bit more and enjoy some luxury living, then this is a good option.
How to get around
Like all the rest of Malaysia, one of the best ways to get around is with Grab. It’s super convenient, cheap and safe. It is what I used and had absolutely no problems with.
How to Stay Safe
Penang is safe. Take normal safety precautions as you would anywhere else.
General Tips
- There is a very large Chinese population in Penang which means a lot of the restaurants are not halal. Always ask if you are unsure.
- I found Penang to be a little more expensive than other cities in Malaysia. Similar to Kuala Lumpur.
Fun Facts
- George Town, located on Penang Island is the second-most populous city in all of Malaysia
- Unlike other areas of Malaysia, Penang is one of four states that have a governor appointed by the King instead of a Sultan.
