1. Explore the Airport
Airports now have a lot to offer. From large beautiful art pieces to indoor parks. Take a moment to walk around and see what the airport you are stopping at has in store. Singapore Airport, for example, is ranked as one of the best airports in the world and has a hedge maze, indoor waterfall, and a butterfly garden!
2. Find the prayer room
It is very rare to find an international airport that does not have some sort of multi-faith/prayer room. During a long layover, it is a perfect opportunity to find the closest prayer room. You can pray your obligatory or nafil prayers, do wudu to freshen up and take a moment to relax and give yourself a break from the hustle bustle of the airport.
3. Get out and explore the city (even if its only for a few hours)
This is the best option. You may never have the chance to travel to the country you are stopping in so why not take this opportunity to head out and explore what the city has to offer. Check out a tourist attraction, find a masjid, meet local Muslims or stop by at a halal restaurant for a quick bite.
4. Check out one of the Lounges
Many travelers are unaware that almost all international airports have private lounges. Usually, these lounges are accessible by those who travel business class but there are also ways of accessing these lounges through a Priority Pass. Airport lounges offer a more private and comfortable airport experience by offering free food and drinks, private washrooms and comfortable sofas. There are also meeting rooms available that can be temporarily used for prayer at some locations.
5. Take a nap
Sometimes the best thing to do at an airport is to take a nap. Especially if the airport is small, doesn’t offer much in terms of attractions and is located in a city where there is not much to do. Find a cozy corner and get some rest.
6. Grab a bite to eat (a local meal if possible)
Flying makes you hungry. It’s a fact. Take a moment to stop by a restaurant on site and have a light snack. Try not to overeat or have soda because it will upset your stomach when in flight. To make things interesting, try to eat something that is uniquely local.
7. Research and learn about where you are
Even if you don’t have a chance to exit the airport, it will make your layover more enjoyable if you know where you are, the history of the country or city, any significant events that took place and interesting facts. It’s a fun activity that will not only improve your IQ but also give you an opportunity to learn something new.
8. Make a new friend
You will be shocked at how many nice, kind and friendly people exist in the world. Really. Most people love to talk, share experiences and make new friends. How cool would it be to start up a conversation with someone random who lives across the world? The airport gives you this unique opportunity. Take this chance to show the other person the beauty of your religion through your manners, actions, and personality.
9. Walk
This is probably the most underrated activity you can do during any layover. Really. Sitting for long hours is not good for anyone. Why not get in some exercise and go for a walk. Walking from one end to the other. Burn some calories!
10. Dua and Dhikr
Three supplications are answered, there being no doubt about them; that of a father, that of a traveler and that of one who has been wronged.
Find a quiet corner, immersive yourself in the remembrance of Allah. Ask for what your heart desires. One of the special times du’s are accepted is when one is traveling. So why not make the most of it.
